How We Rate
Our guides are research-based. Here is exactly what that means, what we look at, and what we do not claim.
What we do
For each guide we review the products available in the category, read the seller's product listings and category buying advice, and weigh features against the questions most shoppers ask. We then rank a short list and explain who each pick suits.
What we do not do
- We have not hands-on tested the products in our guides. Our picks are not lab results or personal test results, and we do not publish scores or star ratings that imply otherwise.
- We do not invent specifications, prices or performance figures. Details labeled "per listing" come from the seller's product title or page and are not independently verified.
- We do not accept payment to change a ranking.
Criteria we use
- Fit for purpose: does the product suit a clearly defined type of buyer?
- Features that matter in the category: for example, steam wands and water tanks for espresso machines, capacity and attachments for stand mixers, navigation and maintenance for robot vacuums.
- Ownership cost and effort: upkeep, consumables, accessories you may also need.
- Transparency of information: how clearly the seller describes the product, warranty and support.
- Availability: whether the product is currently offered to US shoppers through our partner links.
What our labels mean
Instead of scores or star ratings, each pick carries a plain label that explains why it is on the list.
- Best Overall: our first-ranked pick, the one we would suggest most shoppers look at first, based on the criteria below and the information in the listing. It is an editorial judgment, not a test result.
- "Best for …" labels (for example, Best for Small Kitchens): the pick whose listed features most clearly match that type of buyer or home.
- Also Consider: a reasonable alternative, often a closely related listing, that is worth comparing before you buy.
- Labels that include "(per listing)" rely on a claim in the seller's listing that we have not verified.
Limits of our picks
Our lists currently draw on products available through our affiliate partner, so they do not cover the entire market, and some lists feature several models from one brand. We say so on each guide. Always compare options and read the current listing, owner reviews and warranty before buying.
How money fits in
We earn a commission when you buy through some links. That is how we fund the site. Because our lists draw on products available through our affiliate partner, every product we feature can earn us a commission. We do not accept payment from brands to change a ranking. See our Affiliate Disclosure.
