Steam cleaners use hot, pressurized steam to loosen dirt and grease on many hard surfaces using plain water. They are useful for grout, kitchens and bathrooms, but not every surface tolerates steam. This guide compares four steamers and explains what to look for.

These picks are based on desk research of product listings and category buying criteria. We have not hands-on tested these steam cleaners. Details marked "per listing" come from the seller's product title and are not independently verified.

Buying guide: how to choose

Quick checklist before you buy

  • List the surfaces you want to clean and check each one is safe for steam in the flooring or furniture manual.
  • Decide between a handheld unit for spot jobs and a canister unit for bigger areas.
  • Check which accessories are included for grout, floors, upholstery and windows.
  • Look at tank size and heat-up time, which decide how long you can clean before refilling.
  • Check the safety features, such as a child-safety lock on the steam trigger or cap.

A good fit if…

  • You want to clean grout, tile, stovetops and bathrooms without chemical cleaners.
  • You have sealed hard floors or other steam-safe surfaces.
  • You are happy to use attachments for different jobs.

Maybe skip it if…

  • Your floors are unsealed wood or a laminate that the maker says should not be steamed.
  • You need to clean large carpeted areas; a carpet cleaner is a better fit.
  • You want a quick daily floor wipe; a regular mop or robot mop is simpler.

Handheld vs. canister steamers

Handheld steamers are small and quick for spot jobs. Canister steamers hold more water, usually come with more attachments and suit bigger cleaning sessions. Commercial-grade units are built for heavy use.

Which surfaces suit steam

Steam generally suits sealed tile, grout, stone and many hard surfaces. Unsealed wood, some laminates, delicate fabrics and anything heat-sensitive can be damaged. Check the manufacturer guidance for both the steamer and the surface.

Accessories

Brushes, nozzles, floor heads and microfiber covers make the steamer more versatile. Check which accessories come in the box and whether replacements are easy to buy.

Safety and water

Steam is hot enough to burn. Follow the manual, keep children and pets away, and never open a pressurized tank before it has cooled if the manual says so. Some makers recommend distilled or demineralized water to reduce scale.

Frequently asked questions

Is steam cleaning safe for hardwood floors?

Often not for unsealed or worn wood, and some flooring makers advise against steam entirely. Check your flooring manufacturer guidance before steaming.

Does steam kill germs?

Steam at high temperature is widely used for sanitizing, but results depend on temperature, contact time and the surface. Check what the manufacturer specifically claims.

Handheld or canister steamer?

Choose a handheld for quick spot cleaning in small spaces, and a canister model for larger areas and longer sessions.

Did you test these steam cleaners?

No. These are research-based picks, not hands-on tests. See How We Rate for how we choose and what we do and do not claim.
