Damp air leads to musty smells, condensation and, over time, mold. A dehumidifier pulls that moisture out, but the choice between sizes, pint ratings, pumps and desiccant models is confusing. This guide compares six options and explains what matters before you buy.

These picks are based on desk research of product listings and category buying criteria. We have not hands-on tested these dehumidifiers. Details marked "per listing" come from the seller's product title and are not independently verified.

  • Drain hose for continuous drainage (per listing)

What we like

Buying guide: how to choose

Quick checklist before you buy

  • Measure the room or basement area and note how damp it is (musty smell, condensation, visible water).
  • Decide how you will drain it: bucket, gravity hose to a floor drain, or a built-in pump.
  • Check the temperature of the space; desiccant units suit cool spaces better than compressor units.
  • Look for a humidistat so you can set a target humidity instead of running it all the time.
  • Check filter access, bucket size and how easy the unit is to move.

A good fit if…

  • You have a musty basement, crawlspace access area, laundry room or bathroom.
  • You see condensation on windows or pipes, or want to protect stored items from damp.
  • You want to keep indoor humidity in a steady range year-round.

Maybe skip it if…

  • Your air is already dry; adding a dehumidifier will only make it drier.
  • You have an active leak or flooding; fix the water source first.
  • You need whole-home control and already have an HVAC system that can add a built-in dehumidifier.

Pick the right size

Brands rate dehumidifiers by pints of water removed per day and by the area they cover. A bigger unit in a small room simply cycles off more often, while an undersized unit runs constantly and may never reach your target. For a damp basement, many buyers size up.

Pint ratings are maximums measured under set test conditions. In a cool basement the real figure will be lower, so treat the headline number as a comparison point rather than a promise.

Drainage: bucket, hose or pump

Every unit here has a bucket, but emptying it daily gets old fast. A drain hose lets water run by gravity to a floor drain that sits lower than the outlet. A built-in pump can push water upward to a sink or out of a window, which helps in basements without a floor drain.

Compressor vs. desiccant

Compressor dehumidifiers are the most common type and are efficient in warm, humid conditions. Desiccant units use an absorbent material instead; they are usually smaller, can be quieter and tend to keep working in cooler spaces, but they typically use more energy per pint and suit small areas.

Set a sensible humidity target

Many guides suggest keeping indoor humidity roughly between 30 and 50 percent. A built-in humidistat lets you set a target so the unit turns on and off by itself. A cheap standalone hygrometer is a useful way to check the reading.

Energy use and noise

Dehumidifiers often run for long periods, so efficiency matters. An ENERGY STAR label is a reasonable starting point. Compressor units hum and give off a little heat; if the unit goes in a bedroom, look for a quiet mode and check the listed noise figure.

Maintenance

Keep the unit working well with a simple routine; follow your manual where it differs:

  • Rinse or vacuum the air filter every few weeks.
  • Clean the bucket regularly to prevent odors and slime.
  • Keep a few inches of clearance around the intake and exhaust.
  • Check the drain hose for kinks and make sure it runs downhill (unless the unit has a pump).

Frequently asked questions

What size dehumidifier do I need?

Match the listed coverage to your space and size up for very damp areas such as basements. A larger unit reaches the target faster and cycles off, while a small unit in a big damp space may run constantly.

Do I need a dehumidifier with a pump?

Only if you want continuous drainage and there is no floor drain lower than the unit. A pump can push water up to a sink or out of a window; otherwise a gravity drain hose or the bucket works fine.

What humidity should I set?

A common recommendation is roughly 30 to 50 percent indoor humidity. Start around 45 to 50 percent in a basement and adjust if you still notice dampness or the air feels too dry.

Compressor or desiccant: which is better?

Compressor units are usually better for larger, warmer damp spaces. Desiccant units are compact and tend to cope better in cool spaces, but they are best for small areas like closets or small bathrooms.
